Member Spotlight: Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce

"Member Spotlight" is a series from U.S. Business Action to End HIV highlighting inspiring businesses in each of our local chapters that are accelerating progress toward an end to the HIV epidemic in the U.S.

Member Spotlight: Ryan Wilson, Director of Corporate Relations, Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce

This month, we are pleased to spotlight the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber is dedicated to accelerating economic advancement and equality for the LGBTQ+ community. Through advocacy, education, and partnership, the Chamber works to create a thriving, inclusive business environment in the Greater Houston area.

Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce

Why were you interested in being part of Houston Business Action to End HIV?

The Chamber is honored to serve as the managing partner of the Houston Business Action to End HIV. By engaging major employers and LGBTQ+-owned and LGBTQ+-friendly businesses in the local HIV response, the Chamber has a unique opportunity to serve as a catalyst for change in the fight against HIV by leveraging its cultural competence, community connections, and commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. While we know HIV does not just impact LGBTQ+ individuals, our Chamber is uniquely positioned to bring together businesses, public health stakeholders, and community organizations in the fight against HIV.

What’s one thing you’ve done thus far as part of your participation that you’re proud of?

We are really proud of the number of Business & Employee Resource Groups that engaged in this year's Walk to End HIV hosted by Allies in Hope in March. There were over 15 companies represented, both Chamber members and members of the Houston Business Action to End HIV, all walking to raise awareness and funds for HIV treatment and prevention programs in Houston. It was a great turnout with a lot of money raised, but I personally hope we can double that turnout next year!

What’s one thing you’re looking forward to seeing from the local chapter in the year ahead?

As we start to build a larger chapter here in Houston, we can move from introducing people to the concept of businesses playing a role in addressing HIV and move toward more actions taken and collaborations created. We are looking forward to seeing the connections that are being built right now blossoming into some truly innovative programs and solutions that will help reduce HIV stigma as well as HIV infection rates in the region. There's already a lot of great work happening in the community in Houston, and we can't wait to see how businesses bring their unique expertise to the table to assist that great work.
